Last year I was in search for a great book that would bring some newly found inspiration to my life. I’m always searching for something new to help me become a better version of myself. Go figure that I found what I was looking for in the place I least expected, Facebook. I read a quote on a friend’s Facebook status one day randomly scrolling down my timeline, probably out of boredom. The quote related so much to what I was going through at that time in my life. I felt as if the quote was speaking directly to me. I immediately googled the author and researched him. That’s when I was introduced to Paulo Coelho and his amazing book “The Alchemist.”
I purchased the book and anxiously waited for it. Once it came in the mail and was in my hands, I poured myself a cup of coffee and started reading immediately. I could not put it down. It was different from any book I had read in the past. I was so excited by the lessons, messages and quotes as I read, which by the way I love quotes, that I highlighted all my favorite parts so I could re-read them when I was done with the book.
When I finished reading it, I felt so filled and excited about life. I always say that I am a forever dreamer, but reading this book made me realize that the dreamer in me had been silenced for so long and I didn’t even realize it. “The Alchemist” woke that part of me up again that had been put aside. I wanted to desperately be a dreamer again, just like Paulo Coelho’s character in the book was. I wanted to go on a journey to fulfill my personal legend. A personal legend is what you were put to earth to do. According to Coelho, not everyone fulfills their personal legend. Only when you have the courage to go in search of your dreams do you fulfill your personal legend.
I relate so much to the character and his struggle between following your dreams or living a safe life. The book talks about omens, signs from the universe that guide your path to your personal legend. I started seeing many omens after I opened up to the idea of following my dreams. Just like a quote in the book, “and when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” I started believing this.
I went on a search to find a book that would inspire me, but what I found was so much more. I found a book that was life altering and changed my way of thinking. I highly recommend this book to anyone of any age. I’m sure it will inspire you in some way.
Below is my favorite quote from the book, and the second quote is the one that introduced me to “The Alchemist,” which by the way is in the introduction of the book, ironic.
“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams”
“We know what we want to do, but are afraid of hurting those around us by abandoning everything in order to pursue our dream. We do not realize that love is just a further impetus, not something that will prevent us going further. We do not realize that those who genuinely wish us well want us to be happy and are prepared to accompany us on that journey.”
